Short summary
The Trarza phreatic aquifer (40 000 km2, SW Mauritania) is limited by the Senegal River and the Atlantic Ocean. Its main features are : – a regional flow from the south and west to the north-east, with most groundwater levels below the sea level, – a weak but visible recharge by rainfall, of the same order of magnitude than the inflow from the Senegal River – simultaneously a long-term stability (including traces of former transgressions) and multiple impacts of human activities.
