As the adverse impacts of hydrological extremes increase in many regions of the world, a better understanding of the drivers of changes in risk and impacts is essential for effective flood and drought risk management. We present a dataset containing data of paired events, i.e. two floods or two droughts that occurred in the same area. The dataset enables comparative analyses and allows detailed context-specific assessments. Additionally, it supports the testing of socio-hydrological models.

The paper investigates the performance of altimetric satellite instruments to detect river ice onset and melting dates and to retrieve ice thickness of the Ob River. This is a first attempt to use satellite altimetry for monitoring ice in the challenging conditions restrained by the object size. A novel approach permitted elaboration of the spatiotemporal ice thickness product for the 400 km river reach. The potential of the product for prediction of ice road operation was demonstrated.

As climate change completely restructures hydrological processes and ecosystems in alpine areas, monitoring is fundamental to adaptation. Here we present a database on more than 10 years of hydrometeorological monitoring at the Djankuat station in the North Caucasus, which is one of 30 unique world reference sites with annual mass balance series longer than 50 years. We hope it will be useful for scientists studying various aspects of hydrological processes in mountain areas.

In this paper extreme hydrological events on the rivers of European part of Russia are analysed. It is shown that they are closely related to the hydrological regime transformation answering recent climate changes. During the last twenty years the role of the occasional floods on the European part of Russia became more and more important. Number of winter floods, connected with thaws rose dramatically, in the same manner as summer flash floods.

Study of hydraulic and channel changes the Lena River near city Yakutsk was done using STREAM_2D two-dimensional hydrodynamic model (author V. Belikov et al.). Channel changes forecast has shown that degradation of the Adamovskaya branch will be continued, which is the most negative impact for the Yakutsk city. However, to the end of the 10-year forecast period the equal distribution between Adamovskaya and Buorylarskaya channels is possible.

Inundations on the Black Sea coast of the Krasnodar territory of the Russian Federation were analysed for 1945 to 2013. Risks, hazards and damage from inundations here are some of the highest in the country. The large quantity and the extremeness of rainfall, and the intense flood regimes of the rivers are the main contributors. Additionally, anthropogenic impact such as badly planned economic activities in channels, floodplains and on river watersheds strongly enhance the effects.

Our paper is one of very few studies where the influence of stochastic internal atmospheric variability (IAV) on the hydrological response is analyzed. On the basis of ensemble experiments with GCM and hydrological models, we found, e.g., that averaging over ensemble members filters the stochastic term related to IAV, and that a considerable portion of the simulated trend in annual Lena R. runoff can be explained by the externally forced signal (global SST and SIC changes in our experiments).

Results of flood modelling for three cities located in different parts of Russia: Veliky Ustyug (the Northern Dvina river); Mezhdurechensk (the Tom river) and Blagoveschensk (the Amur river) are presented. The two-dimensional hydrodynamic model STREAM_2D was used. Additional verification of the model through comparison of simulated and received from satellite images flooding zones was carried out. Analyses of embankment influence on the water flow were performed.

Heavy ice jams during spring floods are usual on the rivers in the north of the European part of Russia. The last catastrophic flood in the area of study took place in the spring of 2013. An assessment of the probability of floods and formation of ice jams, calculations of duration and depth of flooding at various water levels, with an assessment of the corresponding economic losses in the north of Russia are considered in the current research.
